A HISTORY OF THE RESISTANCE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF BIKE LANES IN THE US

The Toole Design Group has released a fascinating paper that looks at what led the North American engineering establishment to delay the development of US urban bicycle transportation networks for decades, despite the fact that Davis, California, was beginning to build protected bike lanes in the early 1970s. The paper is named A Historical Perspective on the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities and the Impact of the Vehicular Cycling Movement. Topics include side path laws, vehicular cycling, John Forester’s influence against cycling infrastructure, editions of the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities over time, and the eventual leadership of the National Association of City Trnasportation Officials (NACTO).
